Mining and Dwarves Skill Tree
How shards unlock nodes, which early ranks matter, and why a dead-end leaf is permanent.
The skill tree is the long game in Mining and Dwarves. Sockhouse Studios shipped one persistent board: no prestige, no respec, no seasonal wipe. Void shards you earn from the deposit loop stay spent, so this page is about pathing, not about collecting every icon.
What void shards unlock
You click or auto-click rocks. Dwarves haul the drops into the central deposit. The bar fills, a special orb spawns, you mine the orb, and the rocks return. That cycle is how void shards show up. Gold is the other wallet; it does not open the tree. Hover a node before you buy it. The tooltip shows the next cost and whether a prerequisite is still missing.
Shards buy five kinds of power:
- Recruit nodes hire dwarf miners, who damage rocks, and collectors, who haul to the deposit. Later they hire specialists. Launch-week Steam reviews confirm a demolition dwarf. Do not invent names for the other two of the five types.
- Worker speed and carry limit make the crew you already have less idle-looking.
- Max rocks plus one is a density upgrade. Super Auto Miner only hits what sits under your cursor, so a fuller floor is more gold per burst.
- Ability unlocks plus cooldown, duration, and multiplier ranks sit on their own branches.
- Dead-end leaves exist. A duration cap that opens nothing is not the same as a cooldown cut that unlocks the next rank.
Finish getting started before you spray the first shards. The buttons you press are on the abilities page; this page is the board they sit in.
Early nodes versus later nodes
Early nodes are cheap and mostly honest. One miner plus one collector is the first automation spike. Player mining damage is fine while you are still the clicker, then it falls off. Worker movement speed and collector carry are the unsexy ranks that actually shorten the wait between orb cycles.
Max rocks is easy to skip. If a Q burst ends and the floor is already empty, you needed density, not another hire. Recruiting a second collector before Super Auto Miner is usually worse than owning Q with a mixed pair.
Later nodes cost hundreds, then thousands, of shards: deep cooldown ranks, Refresher, Multi Ore chance, and the full-game locks. Sifd’s 100 percent demo still showed Big Rock, Reactive Rocks, Strike the Earth multiplier, and Enhancer multiplier as leftover locks. Those are later-tree or full-game nodes, not missing bugs. Treat the June demo as a map of the early tree, then use the walkthrough for launch content.
Cooldown versus duration versus the crew
Put the five levers in a queue.
Cooldown first on Super Auto Miner. The ability starts as a short hover burst (about seven seconds) on a long cooldown; players see roughly thirty-five seconds before the first big cut. A minus-ten cooldown rank is a new burst every cycle. A plus-one duration rank is a rounding error until Q is already up often.
Duration second, and only after cooldown has a home. Extra seconds matter once you can park the burst on the orb. Duration nodes that cap a stub and go nowhere are dead ends. Do not buy the cap just because it is on screen.
Worker speed next. Speed helps miners reach fresh rocks and collectors reach the deposit. It is the idle-friendly lever: it works while you are in another window.
Max rocks when the floor looks empty under Q. Density feeds the burst. It does not replace a missing collector.
Recruit last among equals, and keep the pair mixed. A third miner while ore sits on the ground is a haul problem. A third collector while rocks live forever is a damage problem. Specialists wait until the mixed pair is online. Compare forks on the skill path ranking instead of buying every dwarf node in sight.
Refresher resets cooldowns and is awkward if Super Auto Miner already covers the cycle. Ore Vacuum is the weak press. Multi Ore is for the orb. Strike the Earth is a ruby-gem chance plus a worker window, not a Q replacement. Big Rock, Reactive Rocks (split lasers), and Enhancer are later keys. Pies on the floor are temporary skill boosts, not tree nodes.
Dead-end leaves and sticky pathing
Because there is no prestige, a dead-end leaf is not a for-this-run tax. It is a permanent hole. In the demo tree, Super Auto Miner duration plus ten seconds sat at the end of a stub. Multi Ore chance plus ten percent did not. Buy nodes that open more nodes. Leave leaves until the branch is done.
You cannot respec a demolition dwarf hire if you later wanted a different specialist. Five dwarf types and eight player abilities stay in the save. Steam Cloud will not fix a bad fork. If two nodes cost the same, take the one that shortens Super Auto Miner downtime, speeds the haul, or unlocks a new pressable ability. When the board is a mess of affordable icons, use the upgrade priority tool.
Path as if this save is permanent: finish Q cooldown ranks, keep a mixed crew, raise max rocks when the burst has nothing to hit, and leave named dead-end leaves for last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What currency unlocks skill tree nodes?
Void shards. You earn them by filling the central deposit and mining the special orb. Gold is a separate wallet and does not open the tree.
Should I buy Super Auto Miner duration or cooldown first?
Cooldown. Early duration ranks are tiny compared with cutting a ~35 second wait. Duration nodes that cap a stub are often dead ends.
Can I prestige or refund a bad node?
No. Mining and Dwarves has no prestige layer and no respec. Every recruit and rank stays, which is why pathing is sticky.
Were leftover locked nodes in the demo bugs?
No. Sifd's 100 percent demo still showed Big Rock, Reactive Rocks, Strike the Earth multiplier, and Enhancer multiplier as later-tree or full-game locks.
When do I recruit extra dwarves?
After a mixed miner and collector pair and Super Auto Miner. Extra miners while ore sits on the floor, or extra collectors while rocks never die, are the usual traps.
